November 2025: Blue Friday 5.0

Ken and newly certified son, Jaydon in Point Lobos

This year marks the fifth anniversary of “Blue Friday”, when our very own Ken Carter took his newly certified son diving at Point Lobos way back in 2021 as a healthy alternative to the traditional Black Friday shopping insanity.

Diving at Point Lobos Again. Ken was inspired by REI closing its stores the day after Thanksgiving. That’s why the members of Marin Scuba Club and the Dive Club of Silicon Valley are avoiding the malls again this year to go diving at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve in Carmel-by-the-Sea on Friday, November 28th. Let him know if you can join him.

The October issue of California Diving News and September’s issue of Scuba Diving Industry Magazine both featured articles about this growing initiative.

More Divers in More Places Than Ever. Over the years, Blue Friday has expanded. This year, we’re proud to say that we hope to have participants in eight countries spanning four continents! For Blue Friday 5.0, Marin Scuba Club now has an alliance with Sun Divers Roatan, GreenFins.net, and Reef-World.org to request that 400 diving operations globally participate this year.

NAUI Worldwide and CORAL.org are also now on board.

Our friends and colleagues in San Diego (Jami Leslie Feldman), Hawai’i (Kerwin Louis on the Big Island with Jack’s Diving Locker), Dive Queensland (Australia), New Zealand, The Philippines, Palau (NECO Marine), Mexico (Heiko of Amigos del Mar), Honduras (Sun Divers Roatan), Chichiriviche de la Costa (Venezuela) , and even the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East will get wet!

Wherever you are, warm or cold water, great viz or not so great, please promote your “Blue Friday” dive to your store, club, and buddies, join us virtually at your favorite dive site, and post about it on social media.

Please email Gil Zeimer if you’ll be diving somewhere.

As I announced at the October meeting, because I don’t dive in any water cooler than 75o, I’ll be taking a dip at the Marin Diving Center’s heated pool. Who wants to join me to work off some of that turkey, stuffing, gravy, and potatoes?

But if you can’t get wet, at least visit and support your local dive shop.

With your continued support, Blue Friday can become an “evergreen holiday event”.

We’re looking for Blue Friday Ambassadors to give this event more prominence and to salute Marin Scuba
Club as the group where it all started!
